How to read an entry

  • Licensed activities are the activities VARA has licensed for that entity; a firm needs a licence for each activity it carries on.[2]
  • Licence condition says which clients the firm may serve, for example institutional, qualified or retail investors, and sometimes limits products such as margin or derivatives trading to some of them.
  • Website URL is the address VARA shows on the record. Typing it yourself is safer than following links in ads or messages.
  • CMA Registration Number appears on most full records. The record does not explain it; the Capital Market Authority is the federal regulator described in our crypto rules guide.
  • Some entries appear in the register list without an individual record page on the check date. For those we show only the fields in the list.

VARA warnings and fines about unlicensed firms

The register lists licensed firms. VARA also publishes notices about firms that it says were not licensed, for example:

  • KuCoin: an investor and marketplace alert[61] and a later notice of fines.[62]
